Westfjords of Iceland Sailboat Based Backcountry Skiing Trip
The newest offering from Lotus Alpine Adventures, we are very excited to be offering this again for 2017 !!
This ‘Westfjords Ski to Sea’ tour combines the best of backcountry skiing & sailing ! Operating from the comfortable traditional oak sailing ship the ‘Donna Wood’, our crew anchor in remote bays only accessible by boat and are the most tranquil and isolated places in Iceland.
Led by IFMGA / UIAGM Mountain Guide, Jayson Simons-Jones, our small crew of up to 4 skiers will explore the remote glacial valleys of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve for some of the most memorable backcountry skiing on the planet, while basing out of the comfortable and unique ‘Donna Wood’ and her crew.
Jökulfirðir are among the most tranquil and isolated places you can find. Jökulfirðir would translate as Glacial Fjords due to the presence of the majestic Drangajökull glacier. Most of Jökulfirðir are inside the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. This incredible area is part of the Northwestern tip of Iceland: The Western Fjords.
Described as the most sparsely populated area in Europe, the West Fjords region covers around 40% of the coastline of Iceland with less then 7,000 inhabitants in total. And even secluded, the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is only accessible by foot or boat.
Our home base for exploring this remote and beautiful part of the world is the old wooden sailing ship the ‘Donna Wood’ The 31.2 m (LOA) ship has a roomy deck saloon – seating 24 total and can accommodate 12 people in 7 beautiful cabins, each equipped with washbasins and closets. The hallway features spacious shared shower facilities and toilets. The ship is nimble and can easily navigate the coastline for better access to these remote locations.
