Certified AMGA and IFMGA Guided Backcountry Ski Trips in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado.
High in the heart of the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado, between the small mountain communities of Ouray & Silverton, lies Red Mountain Pass. Famous for it’s incredible position, big snowfalls, and exceptional and quick backcountry ski access into the heart of the range, this place is called ‘The Million Dollar Highway’ for more then just the views!
With everything from mellow gladed tree skiing, to big alpine bowls and faces, steep couloirs and challenging spring ski mountaineering type descents, the Red Mountain Pass area is the epicenter of all things human-powered and backcountry in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado. Steep valleys, high peaks, big terrain, and quick access into the alpine, backcountry skiing doesn’t get much better then it does here!
Red Mountain Pass is also the home to one of the most unique and amazing backcountry ski huts in the United States….the beautiful hand built, and breathtakingly situated….OPUS Hut, at the head of Ophir Pass between the Silverton and Ophir, CO mountain towns.
An experience at this unique mountain hut is not to be missed. Similar to European and Canadian style backcountry ski lodges, the OPUS Hut is a fully catered, and beautifully architected hut, perched at treeline in the stunning Ophir Pass zone of the San Juan Mountains. Amazing alpine skiing of all types of terrain, and a cozy, fully staffed, and catered hut that sleeps only 16 to come back too at night, makes for an idyllic backcountry ski vacation in the heart of these splendid mountains.
Additionally, stay in Silverton and add on a day of skiing at the world-famous Silverton Mountain Ski Area, OR stay in Ouray and enjoy a day or two of ice climbing in the world-famous Ouray Ice Park. There is lots to do in the beautiful San Juan Mountains of Colorado, and we can offer you high-level professional guiding experiences to help you enjoy any and all of it!
All trips run through a partnership with Peak Mountain Guides.
