The foundational tool for any winter recreationalist to have, the field of avalanche education is continuously evolving and expanding as we come to understand more about the nature of avalanches and the science behind forecasting for them.
Jayson Simons-Jones (JSJ) has made a career over the past 20 years of being in the snow, mountains, and in and around avalanche terrain. Beginning as an AIARE avalanche educator in the early 2000’s and earning his Level 3 certification in 2003, Jayson has since gone on to spend the past 20ish years working as an avalanche forecaster and founding member of the Crested Butte Avalanche Center; as a ski patroller for Crested Butte Mountain Resort; a longtime AMGA Ski Guide and IFMGA Mountain Guide with extensive personal and professional experience guiding and skiing in Colorado, Alaska, Iceland, France, Switzerland, and more …. More recently, he has been helping to develop some of the Professional Level 1 & 2 course curriculum for the Silverton Avalanche School; and has joined the Instructor Team of the American Mountain Guides Association.
Jayson offers a host of different level avalanche education trainings through Lotus Alpine Adventures throughout the Winter season in Colorado. Most AIARE Recreational Level 1 Courses are on a first come basis, and both dates (3 courses) and courses sizes (6 ppl max) are restricted for maximum focus and hands on learning opportunities. Besides this small slate of AIARE courses, Jayson also runs custom curriculum and privately designed avalanche education programs to meet participants needs, and specializes in hybridizing content for those that are looking to continue their learning in a experiential format and are less focused on formal certification. He also teaches for both the American Avalanche Institute and the Silverton Avalanche School in the Pro 1 and Pro 2 course format, and ski guides around Colorado and internationally throughout the Winter & Spring seasons.
Winter 2022/2023 will again no doubt be one with an excessive increase in winter backcountry use. Make sure you, and your partners, are up to speed and have the right training and education to match your goals. Whether it’s a formal AIARE Rec 1 course, or expanding your knowledge through practical skills application through hands on mentored experiences, we have the ability to meet you where you are at and customize your learning to help achieve your personal and professional goals this season while working to ensure your safety.
