Quiet, serene, and uncrowded…The Lake City Ice Park is a great alternative to ‘Colorado’s other famous ice park’ just down the road, and offers a unique and un-intimidating atmosphere for the aspiring ice climber.
Here you can learn the basics of ice climbing, all within less then a hundred steps from your car. The ice tends to be very pristine and the atmosphere incredibly laid back, and it is highly likely that ice climbing here we will see more dogs roving around the area than other ice climbers ! Little known, but just as high quality, the Northern edge of the mighty San Juan Mountains offers a great alternative to the crowds and bustling nature of the Ouray area. Lake City, Colorado is quiet, mellow, and friendly offering a great place to test out the growing sport of ice climbing in a relaxed atmosphere with little commitment factor.
And, for those with previous ice climbing experience, the Lake City Ice Park offers a great place to tune up the skills for a day on it’s virgin flows and more challenging lines, before setting off for some of the areas little known about and even less traveled multi-pitch backcountry ice climbs.
This area of the Northern San Juans has some high quality and very aesthetic backcountry ice climbs, with a fraction of the crowds of other well known areas. Such area classics as: The Sherman Climb (WI5); Open and Closed Caskets (WI4+); and the mythical Curecanti Monster (WI5); as well as many others are all worthy full day objectives in a true wilderness backcountry setting amongst these majestic mountains.
